Bill Murray has said of 2004’s KUNG FU HUSTLE that it is” the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy. …There should have been a day of mourning for American comedy the day that movie came out.”  That’s Bill Murray talking.  Bill Murray.  Now.

Stephen Chow is the writer and director (and star) of KUNG FU HUSTLE.  He hasn’t made a movie since 2008’s CJ7, which was a sci-fi kids’ movie.  His latest, a return to martial-arts epics, is called JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS.

Again: A comic genius has christened Stephen Chow’s last kung fu movie a work of genius.  Now Stephen Chow has a new kung fu movie.  Ergo, seeing this movie ought to be a high priority for anyone who appreciates the action and comedy genres.

But you don’t have to take Bill Murray’s word for it.  You can also take mine.

JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS is based on a piece of 16th century Chinese literature called Journey To The West.  The colon in the title indicates that this is only the first in a series, which OH MAN YES PLEASE, but don’t let me get ahead of myself.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about this movie from me before the year is up, but for now, let me just say this: Pretty much everything I personally want in a movie is here.  Laugh-out-loud gags, lightning-fast action, monsters, pretty girls, monkeys, gorillas, giant boars, giant fish, romance, spiritual questioning, unexpected musical sequences, puppets, horror, bathroom humor, and somehow, more.  If you like any one of those things, let alone all of them, you’ll enjoy this movie.  It’s already set box-office records in China, so there are a whole lot of people who I imagine will back me up on this recommendation.

Here’s an unexplained still frame:

And here’s the trailer:

JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS is slated for a limited release beginning on March 7th, 2014.
