This week on I WAKE UP STREAMING!, we’ve got dozens of notable oddities from every era of psychotronic filmdom!
The Irish horror film A DARK SONG is now available on the service, which Matt Wedge talked about here. Other new additions include Jeffrey Reddick’s DEAD AWAKE with Jesse Bradford and Lori Petty, the UK horror pic THE FORGOTTEN and the fourth season of Bojack Horseman.
New flicks on Hulu include Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D’Onofrio in Antoine Fuqua’s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (2016), James McAvoy in the entertaining Irvine Welsh adaptation FILTH, the 2014 Chinese action film ONCE UPON A TIME IN SHANGHAI (a remake of 1972’s BOXER FROM SHANTUNG), recent zombie flicks DARKEST DAY and ALIEN VS. ZOMBIES, the Australian thriller HOUNDS OF LOVE and, best of all, Jonathan Silverman in ROBO-DOG: AIRBORNE, the long-awaited sequel to ROBO-DOG where he flies now. For TV, you can binge on the Jane Campion-produced Australian thriller Top of the Lake: China Girl, with Elizabeth Moss returning as a Sydney police detective, with Nicole Kidman joining the cast.
New releases on Hoopla include Wesley Snipes in the alien invasion film THE RECALL, the animated Lewis Carroll adaptation THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK and the Serbian-made animated cyberpunk film TECHNOTISE, the slasher throwback MOST LIKELY TO DIE, the docs 24 HOUR COMIC (about Scott McCloud’s 24 Hour Comic Challenge) and AMERICA’S MOST HAUNTED INNS, and, er, 5-HEADED SHARK ATTACK. A few other notable additions include Jim Wynorski’s CHOPPING MALL and the excellent mockumentary WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.
Get your rocks off with Penelope Spheeris’ 1981 punk doc classic THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION and the 1998 follow-up THE DECLINE OF WESTEN CIVILIZATION PART III, Susan Seidelman’s 1982 punk flick SMITHEREENS, The Clash in the 1982 documentary RUDE BOY and punk rock fatherhood in THE OTHER F WORD (2011). Stacy Keach turns in a fantastic performance as a truck driver (sorry, a driver of a truck) hunting a serial killer in Richard Franklin’s 1981 Ozploitation classic ROAD GAMES with Jamie Lee Curtis, now available on the service. Also check out the Israeli black comedy horror pic BIG BAD WOLVES and Shane Meadows’s 2004 thriller DEAD MAN’S SHOES, along with the Marilyn Manson-starring crime thriller LET ME MAKE YOU A MARTYR, exclusive to the service.
Silent films from 1895-1903 including the irresistably-titled AIRY FAIRY LILLIAN TRIES ON HER NEW CORSETS, D.W. Griffith’s A CORNER IN WHEAT (1909), and Brie Larson in Destin Daniel Cretton’s highly recommended foster care facility drama SHORT TERM 12 (2013).
