THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.
THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2017 (All show times are local)
Cinefamily in Los Angeles is screening a rare 35mm print of Willard Hyuck’s cult classic horror film MESSIAH OF EVIL at 7:30 pm. If you’re a horror fan and in the area, you really should make the effort to see this one. It’s a gem. Tickets and info can be found here.
Who doesn’t love CREEPSHOW? No one, that’s who. You can catch a 35mm screening of George Romero and Stephen King’s tribute to EC Comics at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY at 9:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Takashi Miike’s epic Samurai action film 13 ASSASSINS is being screened from a 35mm print at Doc Films on the University of Chicago campus at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $5 at the door. Info can be found here.
I’ve always maintained that TOUCH OF EVIL is Orson Welles’ best movie after CITIZEN KANE. You can see if you agree when it shows at the Metrograph in New York at 4:45 pm and 9:30 pm. This is a 35mm screening that you should not miss. Tickets and info can be found here.
The Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA is showing Jim Jarmusch’s deadpan crime drama/character study GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI at 7:00 pm. This is a 35mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.
If you’re like me, you miss the days when Eddie Murphy made foul-mouthed, very funny R-rated comedies. You can catch one of his best when COMING TO AMERICA screens from a 35mm print at Quad Cinema in New York at 6:45 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
If you know of an under-the-radar theater or film society regularly putting together repertory screenings or special events, feel free to let me know on Twitter!
