[DAILY RUNDOWN] TODAY’S COOL SCREENINGS!

THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2017 (All show times are local)

Mario Bava retrospectives keep popping up all over the country, and I couldn’t be happier about it. The American Cinematheque in Los Angeles kicks theirs off with a double feature of HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON and FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON at 7:30 pm. FIVE DOLLS is a 35mm screening. The Jonathan Demme retrospective continues at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn with CRAZY MAMA, another of his early films produced by Roger Corman. This is a 16mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.

Containing arguably Robert Mitchum’s finest performance, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER is a stone classic by any measure. You can catch it at the Kentucky Theatre in Lexington, KY at 1:30 pm and 7:15 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

There was special sort of insanity to the films of cult horror filmmaker Andy Milligan. I have not seen THE BODY BENEATH, but cannot help but urge you to take the opportunity when a 35mm screening of one of his films happen. The Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn is screening it at 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

A low budget horror film from 1980 about making a low budget horror film? And it stars Tom Savini? You bet I’m highlighting that. EFFECTS plays at FilmScene in Iowa City, IA at 10:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

DEAD RINGERS, David Cronenberg’s bleak tale of brilliant twins psychologically destroying each other, is screening from a 35mm print at Quad Cinema in New York at 9:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

We are a pretty Chicago-heavy staff here at DAILY GRINDHOUSE, so we have a special place in our hearts for THE BLUES BROTHERS. It is playing at the Amherst Cinema in Amherst, MA at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM, Francis Ford Coppola’s romantic vision of American “can do spirit,” is playing at the Metrograph in New York at 7:30 pm. This is a 35mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.
