“Grindhouse Grooves” has a history on this site predating my involvement, but I always liked that it was there and have regretted not managing to bring it back. Life’s too short for regrets, so here we are! The idea of this semi-regular column is that your friends here at Daily Grindhouse aren’t just nutty about movies, but about music too. So occasionally we like to turn you on to some tunes we’re digging, particularly when they come partnered with good visuals.
The latest album by the recently re-formed (but not reformed) band The Afghan Whigs is called In Spades, and it’s an even catchier and more adventurous affair than 2014’s Do to the Beast. That one was the band’s official return after sixteen years, and by now they’re really hitting their stride (again.)
The song “Oriole” isn’t just one of many stand-out tracks on the record — it also has one of the cooler videos I’ve seen in quite some time and I really think Daily Grindhouse readers, particularly horror fans, who may not be acquainted with this band already should give it a look. Beautiful work by director Amy Hood; The video is a little bit SUSPIRIA, a little bit THE WICKER MAN, a little bit spooky, a little bit sexy, and a whole lot not-safe-for-work. Go find a cool damp space and enjoy!
