[Mourning Jams] Day 21: “Social Mediasochist”

October 2019 is a celebration of horror and musicThis October, Daily Grindhouse is celebrating the collision between music and horror with a series of posts under the banner of Rocktoberfest 2019. There will be daily features, recurring bits, and some special posts around the subject.

Mourning Jams is your daily kick off every morning with a different music video that has some horror elements to it. Crossing genres, decades, and more, it’s a good way to get in the spooky mood this Halloween month.

Yes, we’ve covered “Social Mediasochist” by Common Shiner before—but dangit, it’s the perfect funny, sweet, wall-to-wall horror referencing music video for Rocktoberfest! Directed by Zoran Gvojic, the 2014 video for “Social Mediasochist” from Before They Sold Out Part 2 is a loving ode to the genre packed on top of a zippy pop song about how the social media postings of a crush haunts someone. The Chicago band’s clever and fairly relatable lyrics, quick mall-pop with punk influence sound coupled with the genuine knowledge and seeming respect for horror flicks makes this video work so well.

Sure there are some groanworthy gags, and some lazy bits of costumery—but compared to the grand scope of “Social Mediasochist” that leads to ghouls and slashers from all parts of the horror video aisle shimmying together on the dance floor, all can be forgive. Plus who doesn’t love an underdog story? Even if that underdog is deranged lunatic in hockey mask! My one quibble? I don’t think Michael Myers would be a jock. Pinhead—sure, I can see it. Leatherface—OBVIOUSLY. But Myers strikes me as the quiet, hulking artsy type that writes poetry the guidance counselor should really take a look at.

If you like this video, then good news awaits. There was a successful Kickstarter campaign and…well, just wait for what tomorrow will bring.

…it’s the sequel to “Social Mediasochist.” I’m terrible at surprises.

Tune in tomorrow and every morning in October for a new music video to help start the day on the frightening foot as Halloween swiftly approaches.
