[DAILY RUNDOWN] TODAY’S COOL SCREENINGS!

THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2018 (All show times are local)

Along with our friends at THE AV CLUB, DAILY GRINDHOUSE is sponsoring a screening of ’70s obscurity THE ASTROLOGER at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago at midnight. Due to rights issues with songs used in the film, it most likely will never be given a home video release, so this is a very rare opportunity that you should take advantage of! Tickets and info can be found here.

Donald W. Thompson’s early Christian scare film about the Rapture A THIEF IN THE NIGHT is playing at the Spectacle Screening Room in Brooklyn at midnight. This one is beyond bonkers. Don’t miss it! Tickets and info can be found here.

Ultra dark comedy BUZZARD was one of my favorite films of 2015. You can catch it at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles at 10:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York is showing Larry Cohen’s brilliant GOD TOLD ME TO at 7:00 pm. I, of course, wholly endorse showing any of Cohen’s films in a museum, but especially this one. Tickets and info can be found here.

Jacques Tati’s terrific slapstick comedy about modern life PLAYTIME is screening from a 35mm print at the Trylon Cinema in Minneapolis at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

Catch Orson Welles’ twisty, clever pseudo-documentary F FOR FAKE screen from a 35mm print at Anthology Film Archives in New York at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

International House in Philadelphia is doing a double feature of low-budget ’40s film noir flicks at 7:00 pm with HE WALKED BY NIGHT and OPEN SECRET. Tickets and info can be found here.

Melvin Van Peebles’ revolutionary SWEET SWEETBACK’S BAADASSSSS SONG is showing at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
