THE 2023-2024 BIZARRO OSCARS! BY THE DAILY GRINDHOUSE STAFF

Welcome back to Daily Grindhouse’s mostly-annual feature where we celebrate lots of stuff that goes overlooked by the normal-people Oscars. We like a lot of the same things they do, but we also like a whole lot of stuff that will go unmentioned tonight. You’ll see us mentioning a ton of horror movies, for example. Every year, parts of the horror community start belly-aching about horror being under-represented at the Oscars. Oh yeah? You want the rawest of disreputable outlaw genres to put on a tuxedo? Horror is supposed to push the envelope, not to wait on baited breath for it to be opened. Also: Who gives a shit? Don’t wait for anybody else to validate the stuff you love. The fact that you love it is enough. Shout it out! Share it with others! Make your own “Oscars” if you have to. Plenty of our peers at other sites do their own versions of year-ending ‘awards.’ This one is ours. Hope you enjoy it! We had fun putting it together.

This is the Somethingth Annual Bizarros — an exact “annual” count is dodgy since we skipped a year somewhere in there (although here’s 201420162017201820192020, 2021, and 2022!). We will keep it up until DC Comics sends a cease-and-desist!

BEST DESERVES-HER-OWN-MOVIE CHARACTER

JON ABRAMS:

Sasha Calle as Supergirl in THE FLASH. Again, I cannot stop reminding you how much of a whole-ass mess this movie was, but that is not to say she shouldn’t get another shot at doing this, because she was a bright spot.

KATIE BEACHY:

Absolutely the butler from SALTBURN.

ZACH BUTCHER:

NICOLAS CAGE AS BIZARRO SUPERMAN

BEST NICOLAS CAGE MOVIE

JON ABRAMS:

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

KATIE BEACHY:

Of course DREAM SCENARIO, but honorable mention to THE RETIREMENT PLAN. Had either dad replaced Liam Neeson in TAKEN it would have been a 20 minute short.

BRETT GALLMAN:

RENFIELD

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

RENFIELD

VALERIE THOMPSON:

RENFIELD

BEST STUNT SEQUENCE

JON ABRAMS:

The steps in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4. The entire movie — the entire franchise — is full of just as worthy examples, but this one goes from being a brilliant set piece to being essential thematically to the film and then transcends it to apply to life itself. I would venture to mention it in the same breath as the alley fight in THEY LIVE.

BRETT GALLMAN:

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (take your pick of any sequence)

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The top-down “Hotline Miami”  scene in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4.

VALERIE THOMPSON:

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (stairs)

BEST FIGHT

BRETT GALLMAN:

JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4 (take your pick of any sequence)

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The Osaka Continental, JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4

BEST CAR

KATIE BEACHY:

Jason Momoa’s lavender Impala in FAST X

ZACH BUTCHER:

Barbie’s Car

BRETT GALLMAN:

JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4

BEST CAR CHASE

JON ABRAMS:

Not a chase, but the most unforgettable scene involving cars in 2023 was the Mille Miglia tragedy towards the end of FERRARI. Unless you know the history (I didn’t), there’s no way you’ll see the scene coming, but once it happens, you won’t easily shake it. I wish that I felt nearly as strongly about the rest of the movie, but that one scene is a master filmmaker at the height of his powers.

KATIE BEACHY:

John Cena being chased in an El Camino outfitted with rocket launchers in FAST X.

BRETT GALLMAN:

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The Arc De Triomphe scene in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4

BEST DOG

JON ABRAMS:

Cosmo in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. I missed the Holiday Special and I don’t know the character from the comics, so when I sat down to watch VOL. 3, I had no idea where they got a dog with superpowers from, but maybe more movie sequels should have random dogs with superpowers randomly pop up in between chapters. I also liked Hedricks (played by Jellybean) in PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES.

KATIE BEACHY:

The dog in INFINITY POOL. IYKYK.

KATELYN NELSON:

Alexander Skarsgaard in INFINITY POOL

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The German Shepherd in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4. Goodboi.

MOST MEMORABLE DOG

BRETT GALLMAN:

WHEN EVIL LURKS

BEST ANIMAL PERFORMANCE BY AN ANIMAL ACTOR

KATIE BEACHY:

Eli the owl in KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON

ZACH BUTCHER:

The cat in EVIL DEAD RISE

BRETT GALLMAN:

Cocaine Bear, COCAINE BEAR

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The Cocaine Bear

BEST WORST MOVIE

JON ABRAMS:

SLOTHERHOUSE is the rarest of things: An intentionally goofy “horror movie” that 100% works as I imagine it was intended. Go seek this one out.

KATIE BEACHY:

INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER

WORST BEST MOVIE

JON ABRAMS:

Nothing about the crop of prestige movies of 2023, especially the 2023 Best Picture Nominees at the real Oscars, strike me as remotely egregious. In fact, most of them are pretty great! But as for genre stuff, I am so not on board with virtually everybody else when it comes to EVIL DEAD RISES. Oy vey. And believe me, it pains me not to love a movie that is nominally part of this franchise.

BRETT GALLMAN:

SALTBURN

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

POOR THINGS

BEST HERO MOMENT

JON ABRAMS:

GODZILLA MINUS ONE‘s Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) gives you two: He pulls off the mission and hits the monster square in the teeth with his fighter plane (#1) but he also (#2) remembered the ejector seat.

BRETT GALLMAN:

Tom Cruise once again saving cinema in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Kamikaze attack in GODZILLA MINUS ONE

BEST “FUCK YOU” MOMENT

JON ABRAMS:

Normally I would reserve my nomination for Best “Fuck You” Moment for good triumphing over evil, but in COBWEB, the reverse is true when the big twist comes and young Peter finds out what his parents didn’t tell him about Sarah. I’m never rooting for evil to win, but I do love a great scary-movie “gotcha” bit.

KATIE BEACHY:

Keira Knightley, THE BOSTON STRANGLER

BRETT GALLMAN:

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The wood chipper, EVIL DEAD RISE

BEST OPENING SCENE

JON ABRAMS:

KNOCK AT THE CABIN. My appreciation for M. Night Shyamalan comes and goes depending on the project, but he’s leaping off here from superior source material, courtesy of Paul Tremblay, and a hell of a performance from Dave Bautista.

ZACH BUTCHER:

EVIL DEAD RISE

BRETT GALLMAN:

THE KILLER

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

EVIL DEAD RISE

BEST OPENING CREDITS SEQUENCE

BRETT GALLMAN:

THE HOLDOVERS

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

GODZILLA MINUS ONE

VALERIE THOMPSON:

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES

ARE YOU BACK TO THEATERS REGULARLY? IF SO, WHAT MOVIES BRING YOU OUT OF THE HOUSE?

JON ABRAMS:

Yeah. I’m thinking I’m back. And it’s always monster movies.

KATIE BEACHY:

Somewhat. What brings me out now are a select few movies I can’t wait until release to see or avoid spoilers, and more recently, older films I have yet to see on the big screen.

ZACH BUTCHER:

Arthouse movies.

KATELYN NELSON:

Lately I have still only gone out to see movies with family, but the only ones that bring me out still are new releases I am most interested in. I’d probably go more if there was one closer. Sigh.

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Semi-regularly, but it has to feel like it would be best experienced in a large format environment with surround sound.

AND WHAT WAS YOUR BEST BIG-SCREEN EXPERIENCE OF THE YEAR? (NEW RELEASE and/or
REPERTORY)

JON ABRAMS:

New Release: taking my niece and her best friend to see TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANT MAYHEM

Repertory: THE WILD BUNCH at the Paris Theater for my birthday

KATIE BEACHY:

SALTBURN

ZACH BUTCHER:

BARBIE

BRETT GALLMAN:

New release: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING

Repertory: CHRISTINE

KATELYN NELSON:

The BARBIE Movie

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

GODZILLA MINUS ONE in black and white. It completely changed the tone and mood. I spent most of the movie actively in tears.

WHAT STREAMING RELEASE DO YOU WISH YOU SAW ON THE BIG SCREEN WITH AN AUDIENCE?

JON ABRAMS:

WHEN EVIL LURKS and SLOTHERHOUSE.

KATIE BEACHY:

BARBIE!

BRETT GALLMAN:

SALTBURN

KATELYN NELSON:

RRR

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

BARBIE, 100%

WAS THERE ANY STUDIO FEATURE YOU FELT ACTUALLY BENEFITTED FROM WATCHING AT HOME?

JON ABRAMS:

NO ONE WILL SAVE YOU. I’d have been in a fucking fury if people talked or lit up phones during that one.

KATIE BEACHY:

Paying $20 to see BEAU IS AFRAID at home was priceless just for the rewind feature alone.

ZACH BUTCHER:

TOTALLY KILLER

BRETT GALLMAN:

THE ZONE OF INTEREST (a nauseating experience on a small screen—I can only imagine how oppressively horrific it is on a big screen)

KATELYN NELSON:

BEAU IS AFRAID

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

OPPENHEIMER, because I could take a fucking break.

DID YOU HAVE A GO-TO 2023 SUB-GENRE? i.e. contagion horror, zombie-apocalypse, shark movies, etc.

KATIE BEACHY:

Apocalyptic horror, and watching every single movie Ryan Gosling has ever been in.

ZACH BUTCHER:

Erotic thrillers

BRETT GALLMAN:

Slasher movies

KATELYN NELSON:

Found-Footage

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Giant Monsters/ Historical Horror

JON ABRAMS:

Killer-shark movies (it’s the same answer for me every year)

WHAT ONE 2023 TV SERIES DID YOU MOST ENJOY BINGE-WATCHING?

JON ABRAMS:

The Curse

KATIE BEACHY:

Fall Of The House Of Usher

ZACH BUTCHER:

I Think You Should Leave (Season 3)

KATELYN NELSON:

Fall Of The House Of Usher

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Fall Of The House Of Usher. Dope.

VALERIE THOMPSON:

The Bear (Season 2)

SAME QUESTION AS ABOVE, BUT WHAT NON-2023 TV SHOW SAVED YOUR YEAR?

JON ABRAMS:

Warrior

KATIE BEACHY:

Watching Modern Family for the first time!

ZACH BUTCHER:

Twin Peaks, always

KATELYN NELSON:

Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Romance is A Bonus Book

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

The Simpsons. I now have a lot of great memories tied to re-watching that series throughout 2023 and it remains a firm favorite.

VALERIE THOMPSON:

Futurama

WHICH MOVIE STAR WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO GO BACK TO QUARANTINE WITH, AND WHY?

JON ABRAMS:

Donnie Yen. I can’t get him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that ought to be his, but I can get him some good pizza from this little spot I know in the Bronx.

BRETT GALLMAN:

Keanu Reeves.

WHAT MOVIE GAVE YOU HOPE FOR THE FUTURE IN 2023?

JON ABRAMS:

Surprised to find my reflex answer is OPPENHEIMER. I’m not the biggest champion of the movie, really, but it was really cool to be in a packed IMAX (!) screening to see a movie that wasn’t based on “IP,” considered real-world issues, and even had nakedness in it. Sure, it took an A-list director and a small army of movie stars to get it made, but still, wouldn’t it be nice if movies for grown-ups who like to think about things came back and replaced all these movies for grown-ups with severe emotional issues?

KATIE BEACHY:

GODZILLA MINUS ONE – it will make you rethink everything about film budgeting and special effects.

ZACH BUTCHER:

DAD & STEPDAD

BRETT GALLMAN:

ASTEROID CITY

WHICH SONGS SAVED YOUR LIFE IN 2023? BONUS POINTS IF IT CAME FROM A MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.

JON ABRAMS:

blackout signal” by Billy Nomates. It’s not from a movie. Maybe I ought to make one.

ZACH BUTCHER:

Dance the Night” by Dua Lipa

WHICH BELOVED CELEBRITY WE LOST IN 2023 WOULD YOU CHEER FOR LOUDEST DURING THE BIZARRO ‘IN MEMORIAM’ TRIBUTE? AND WHY?

JON ABRAMS:

With respect to anyone who lost someone who inspired them last year, I was hit real hard by losing Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Marlene Clark, William Friedkin, Al Jaffee, Trugoy The Dove, Shane MacGowan, Pee-Wee Herman, John Romita Sr., Suzanne Somers, Ray Stevenson, Tina Turner, and most of all, Richard Roundtree and Raquel Welch. Most of these are names who have been with me almost all my life, even though I don’t know them personally. Much love to anyone who’s hurting over loss. My 2023 tribute here.

ZACH BUTCHER:

Piper Laurie: her role in Twin Peaks was enough for me to love her.

BRETT GALLMAN:

Burt Young.

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Lance Reddick. He took over the screen in every performance he gave in his career and he was taken far, far too soon.

WHAT CATEGORY SHOULD THE REAL OSCARS HAVE THAT THEY DON’T?

JON ABRAMS:

As always, Best Stunts. These are people who are literally risking their lives to bring us cool shit in movies. Outside of writers, these are the only people who never get anywhere near the attention they deserve.

BRETT GALLMAN:

Obviously Stunts, but also: Best Ensemble (BROOKLYN 45 would get my vote).

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

Best Practical Effect and Best Digital Effect.

Best stunt sequence: The top down “Hotline Miami” sequence in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER MIAMI 4.

WHAT CATEGORY IS THIS LIST MISSING, AND WHO SHOULD WIN?

SAMANTHA SCHORSCH:

BEST PRACTICAL EFFECT

The full scale replica WW2 plane that is now in a museum from Godzilla Minus One

JON ABRAMS:

PERFORMER WHO DESERVES A TARANTINO-TYPE REVIVAL:

I mean, there’s a bunch I could name. At the moment, I happen to think I wish we could have done a lot more with Kris Kristofferson in the last twenty-some-odd years. It’s probably not going to happen now, which is a god000damn shame.

MOVIE WE NEED CHRISTOPHER LLOYD TO INVENT A TIME MACHINE TO UNDO:

YOU PEOPLE (an egregious waste of Eddie Murphy and even worse, of Nia Long)

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A PUPPET AS A VILLAIN:

SLOTHERHOUSE

BRETT GALLMAN:

BEST POPE’S EXORCIST: Russell Crowe, THE POPE’S EXORCIST

BEST PLANE: PLANE

BEST HORROR MOVIE DEATH: SAW X (brain surgery)

BEST STUART GORDON MOVIE NOT DIRECTED BY STUART GORDON: SUITABLE FLESH

BEST PICTURE: THE IRON CLAW

(JA popping back in to say my pick for Best Picture, if DG were to do that, would be GODZILLA MINUS ONE. The Japanese got it right. Runner-up for me would be JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4. We got a couple instant classics in 2023.)

SEE YOU LAST YEAR!
