Happy Halloween, and to all a good fright! We asked our contributors,
What scary movies do you watch for comfort, not chills, especially at this time of year?
Preston Fassel:
My comfort watch is VIDEODROME. It drips with nostalgia for me; I was an inveterate insomniac in the ’90s and early 2000s, and late-night cable became my best friend, so there’s a weird sense of comfort and familiarity to the idea of a movie based around a pseudo-clandestine TV station that comes alive after dark. Too, I was a child of the analogue revolution of the ’80s. My dad was an engineer and systems analyst for Southwestern Bell and worked in their then-brand-new pristine headquarters at One Bell Center in St. Louis, at the time a modern wonder of the technological world. My earliest years of life were spent around exactly the kind of tech that permeates Harlan’s pirate laboratory, and when I would accompany dad to work—where I was something of a child mascot—I was doted on people very much like Harlan and Bridey. So despite the gruesome subject matter, there’s a weird sort of sense of escape to the past every time I pop VIDEODROME into the player. It’s like being able to take a comforting detour into my own past that never fails to disappoint.
Bee Delores:
As someone who’s experienced plenty of death in the fall, this time of year is particularly difficult to navigate. But thank god for horror to alleviate the grief. I could give you a laundry list of comfort horror that I often gravitate toward, but I’ll just name a few favorites. I’ll put on ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE or THE FINAL GIRLS if I need a good cry?but for an injection of adrenaline, I have X, FEAR STREET: 1994, and HALLOWEEN H20 in constant rotation. Or if I need a good chuckle, GATLOPP: HELL OF A GAME, DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, FREAKY, TRAGEDY GIRLS, and I BLAME SOCIETY are my go-to picks. Others I frequent include HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT II, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1990), WEREWOLVES WITHIN, DEADSTREAM, and THE BURNING.

Janine Pipe:
Always DOG SOLDIERS, as I know it inside out, HOCUS POCUS gives me warm and fuzzy nostalgia, BRAINDEAD and PSYCHO GOREMAN just make me laugh, and FINAL DESTINATION for date-night memories with my now-husband.
